Reading

Chicken has made rapid progress in his reading. His reading has mostly consisted of short phonics stories and his weekly school reader.

Today I was talking to my sister who also home schools and she told me about the Bob Books. They are short books with adorable illustrations.Mason can actually read an entire book by himself now. He loves this and read five to Boo tonight before bed.

I loved seeing Mason read to his sister! It was so sweet:)

First Day of School…

So today was our first day of home schooling. The co-op that we joined does not start until September 12th, but I already have all my teachers editions and most of the stuff I need to start. So I thought what better way then to ease into it on a Friday with a three day weekend. I looked over the lesson last night and everything was pretty straight forward. I was fortunate enough to get all the visuals with the curriculum I bought. I would not of normally spent the extra money on visuals but after having done just one day of school I would say they make all the difference in the world.

Some of our visuals for our first day.

Chicken and Boo were immediately engaged in the lesson. I loved how everything tied together in the different lessons. If we do home school next year I think it will be worth the extra money just to buy the visuals.

We started out with Boo sitting in on our lessons. I let her sit in with the idea if she got bored she could always go play. But she wanted to sit in the whole time. I initially was going to teach for 30 minutes then take a 15 minute break but Mason wanted to keep going so we worked for an hour. And then we took a 30 minute break and finished our last subject.

When we were done I said well that is it. He had this stricken look on his face and said but I want to do more! I said we will do more another day. He was so disappointed and then he said he wishes we could do it every day. I told him not to worry that we would except for the weekends.

We started at 9 and were done by 11 of course that included our 30 minutes break. But after we were done we went to run a few errands. It was so nice having all afternoon to run errands knowing we already had school done for the day. While were out we grabbed a snack at Panera Bread to celebrate our first day of school.

This is Boo wanting to know if she can have Mason’s cream cheese.

This is Mason basically telling her no.

After Panera we went to Toys R Us since it ‘s so close to the mall.  The Chickens love to visit this store and just look around they would spend hours if you let them.  One of their favorite things to do is “drive” the play cars.

I shudder to think she will be driving in 13 years.

While we were at Toys R Us Chicken made the comment that he wished he could go to school until he was a Grandpa!  After we got home we went for a quick swim and then the Chickens chilled on the sofa.

Two tired Chickens..

It was so encouraging to me to have him so interested and to consider it “fun”. Especially for someone like me who does not consider themselves teacher material and who does not have any college under my belt. I figure if I can do it then anyone can do it.

Chicken

So I sat down to write something because I have not posted on this blog in forever.  I didn’t really have anything witty to say or a funny story to tell.  So out of sheer boredom I started poking around on my computer looking at old pictures and I found some that made my heart melt.

This  is Mason when he was about seven months old. I swear you forget how tiny your kids used to be! I almost can’t even remember him being this small. I mean look at that face I want to eat it.

It’s just hard for me to believe that he went from this to getting his own library card last month in five short years.  I just wish I could bottle him up and keep him small forever….

Chicken so proud with his library card..

Mason’s Building Show

Funny things happen when you let your kids use your iPhone.  Chicken was building something “awesome” the other day.  He rushed into the kitchen asking me for my phone so he could take a picture of it.  When he came back he had recorded this. It’s to cute.  I apologize for the the fuzziness at the top of the screen. He used the front facing camera and since my screen is cracked it’s a little distorted at the top.

Happy Birthday Mason!

Today is Mason’s birthday.. He is five. Where is the world did the time go? How did we go from this…

To this?

I think that is one of the hardest things about your kids having birthdays. You celebrate each mile stone, but you miss them being small and know that soon they will be all grown up.

So Happy Birthday Chicken. Your momma loves you!

Chicken enjoying his birthday cupcakes!

Boo enjoying some birthday cupcakes too!

Forgiveness

Yesterday was just one of those rough mommy days. My patience was short. We’ve all had those days the kind of days you wish you could do over because you were def not at the top of your mommy game. Well it was that kind of day for me.

We finally ….finally ….finally had gotten the Chickens down for the night…and taken some much needed down time to just veg out. When we heard crying from upstairs.

It was Chicken I am not sure what was wrong either his pillow was not right or his covers or the music was to loud or to soft. They can be so particular at night. Ben was sweet and went up and checked on him got him settled and came back down stairs. A few minutes later we heard more sobbing so I told Ben I have to go upstairs and check I can’t enjoy just sitting here when one of them is upset.

I found a sobbing Chicken I mean gut wrenching sobs. I hugged him and asked him what was wrong. He clutched at me and said, ” I just wanted my mommy.”

And then he hugged me so tight. We stayed like that for a while and I whispered to him that he was the best boy in the whole world and a mommy could not ask for a better boy… he melted my heart and said I was the best mommy in the whole world. I told him I was sorry for not being a good mommy today and that I would do better tomorrow. He said it was ok and that he loved me.

Children are so forgiving and loving I wish as adults we were more like that. We snuggled in bed together for a while and talked. The day was rough and crappy but it ended on a sweet note.
